Golden Hour Family Photoshoot at Blaise Castle | Celebrating a 3rd Birthday in Bristol

There are few things more special than celebrating a milestone birthday with family photographs, and this recent session at Blaise Castle Estate was the perfect example of how relaxed, natural photography can capture memories that last a lifetime.

This lovely family chose to celebrate their little boy's 3rd birthday with an outdoor photoshoot surrounded by nature. Instead of a traditional studio session, we embraced the beautiful summer evening light, wandering through the fields and woodland while their son explored, laughed and simply enjoyed spending time with Mum and Dad.

Why Blaise Castle is Perfect for Family Photography

Blaise Castle is one of my favourite locations for family photography in Bristol. It offers so much variety in one place, including:

  • Beautiful open fields

  • Woodland paths

  • Long summer grasses

  • Mature trees

  • Soft golden hour light

  • Plenty of space for children to run and play

Young children rarely enjoy standing still for posed photographs, so having space to move around naturally makes a huge difference. Rather than asking them to smile at the camera, I encourage games, cuddles, walks and little adventures together.

The result is authentic images full of genuine smiles and connection.

A Relaxed Approach to Children's Photography

At three years old, curiosity takes over!

This session wasn't about perfect poses—it was about letting this little explorer enjoy his surroundings while I quietly documented those beautiful in-between moments.

We captured:

  • Family cuddles

  • Walking hand in hand

  • Running through the long grass

  • Exploring woodland paths

  • Giggles with Mum and Dad

  • Natural portraits in the evening sunshine

These are often the photographs families treasure the most because they reflect who their child truly is at this stage in life.

Why Golden Hour Makes Such Beautiful Photographs

We timed the session for the evening when the sun was beginning to set.

Golden hour provides:

  • Soft flattering light

  • Warm natural colours

  • Gentle shadows

  • A relaxed atmosphere

  • Beautiful glowing backgrounds

It's one of the best times of day for outdoor family photography, particularly during the summer months.

Creating Memories Instead of Poses

One thing I always tell families is that you don't need to worry if your child doesn't sit still.

In fact, I expect them not to!

My sessions are designed around children being children. Whether they're picking flowers, collecting sticks, running across a field or enjoying cuddles with their parents, those real moments create the most meaningful photographs.

Thinking About Booking Your Own Family Session?

Whether you're celebrating a birthday, welcoming a new addition to the family, or simply want updated family photographs, outdoor sessions offer a relaxed experience that feels more like an evening walk than a formal photoshoot.

If you're looking for a family photographer in Bristol, I'd love to help you capture memories you'll look back on for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where was this family photoshoot?

This session took place at Blaise Castle Estate in Bristol, one of the city's most beautiful outdoor photography locations.

What age is best for family photos?

Every age is wonderful, but toddlers between 2–5 years old are especially fun to photograph outdoors because they're naturally curious and love exploring.

How long does a family photoshoot last?

Most family sessions last between 30–60 minutes, giving plenty of time to explore without children becoming tired or overwhelmed.

What should we wear?

Neutral tones, earthy colours and soft textures photograph beautifully outdoors. I always provide guidance before your session to help coordinate outfits without looking too "matchy."

What if my child won't smile?

That's completely normal and there's absolutely no pressure. I focus on genuine expressions and interactions rather than asking children to constantly look at the camera.

Can we bring siblings or grandparents?

Absolutely! Outdoor family sessions can include immediate family members, siblings and even grandparents if you'd like to create multi-generational photographs.

Where else do you photograph families in Bristol?

Alongside Blaise Castle, I regularly photograph families at:

  • Ashton Court

  • Leigh Woods

  • Oldbury Court Estate

  • The Downs
