Engagement & Couples Photography in Bristol: A Recent Summer Shoot

An engagement is such an exciting time, and an engagement photoshoot is a lovely way to capture this special chapter before the wedding day.

As a couples photographer in Bristol, I love photographing engagement sessions because they are relaxed, personal and all about capturing the connection between two people. Unlike wedding photography, there is no tight schedule or long list of photographs to work through. We can take our time, explore a beautiful location and capture the two of you simply enjoying being together.

Recently, I photographed a beautiful couple for an engagement photoshoot at De Vere Tortworth Court, just outside Bristol. It was a gorgeous summer evening, providing the perfect setting for a relaxed couples photography session.

A Summer Engagement Photoshoot

The warm evening light made the perfect backdrop for this particular engagement session. We explored the grounds together, making use of the different scenery and architecture to create a varied collection of photographs.

Rather than having the couple stand and pose for every photograph, I wanted the session to feel natural and relaxed. We incorporated walking, talking, laughing and simply spending time together, alongside some more traditional portraits.

This is one of my favourite things about engagement photography. The photographs can tell a story of your relationship rather than simply being a collection of posed images.

Natural Couples Photography in Bristol

When photographing couples, my aim is always to capture the relationship between you.

I know that being photographed can initially feel a little awkward, particularly if you're not used to having professional photographs taken. You don't need to know how to pose or worry about what to do with your hands. I'll guide you throughout the session.

Instead of giving you complicated poses, I'll use simple prompts and encourage you to interact with each other. Walking together, holding hands, chatting or looking at each other can create beautiful, natural moments.

During this recent engagement shoot, this approach helped create a mixture of romantic portraits and candid photographs that really reflected the couple's connection.

Choosing the Right Location for Your Engagement Shoot

One of the best things about an engagement photoshoot is that you can choose a location that suits you.

For this particular session, the grounds surrounding De Vere Tortworth Court provided a beautiful mixture of greenery, historic architecture and open spaces. The variety meant that we could move around throughout the session and create lots of different looks.

However, you don't need to choose a wedding venue for your engagement photos.

There are lots of beautiful couples photography locations around Bristol and Bath, from parks and gardens to city streets, countryside and locations that have a special meaning to you as a couple.

You might choose somewhere connected to your relationship, perhaps where you had your first date, where you got engaged or simply your favourite place to spend time together.

If you aren't sure where would work best, I'm always happy to suggest locations based on the style of photographs you're looking for.

What to Wear for Couples Photography

Your outfits can make a big difference to the overall feel of your photographs, but there's no need to overthink them.

I recommend choosing clothes that you feel comfortable and confident in. Coordinating colours and styles can look lovely without needing to match exactly.

For outdoor engagement photography, neutral, earthy and soft tones can work particularly well, especially when you're surrounded by greenery.

You could also bring a second outfit if you'd like more variety in your final gallery.

Most importantly, wear something that feels like you.

Why Have an Engagement Photoshoot Before Your Wedding?

An engagement session isn't just about getting some beautiful photographs before your wedding.

It's also a great opportunity to become more comfortable in front of the camera.

If you're nervous about having your photograph taken, an engagement photoshoot allows you to experience how your photographer works without the pressure of your wedding day. You'll quickly realise that you don't need to be naturally confident in front of the camera to create beautiful photographs.

It also gives us the chance to get to know each other, so when your wedding day arrives, having me there with a camera feels much more familiar.

And, of course, you'll have a gallery of photographs documenting this exciting period of your relationship.

Couples Photography in Bristol, Bath and Surrounding Areas

Although this recent engagement shoot took place at De Vere Tortworth Court, I photograph couples across Bristol, Bath and the surrounding areas.

Every couple and every session is different. Some people prefer beautiful countryside and gardens, while others love an urban setting or somewhere meaningful to them.

Whether you're newly engaged, celebrating an anniversary or simply want to document your relationship, a couples photoshoot is a wonderful way to create photographs that you can look back on for years to come.

My approach is relaxed and natural, with a mixture of gentle direction and candid moments so you can concentrate on enjoying the experience rather than worrying about the camera.

Engagement & Couples Photography FAQ

Do we have to be engaged to book a couples photoshoot?

No! Couples photography isn't just for engaged couples. You can book a session to celebrate an anniversary, a milestone or simply because you'd like some beautiful photographs together.

We're awkward in front of the camera, will you tell us what to do?

Absolutely. You don't need any modelling experience or previous experience having professional photographs taken. I'll guide you through the session with simple prompts and natural interactions.

Where can we have an engagement photoshoot in Bristol?

There are lots of options around Bristol, Bath and the surrounding areas. We can use a park, gardens, countryside, city location or somewhere that is personally meaningful to you.

What should we wear for our engagement photos?

Choose something you feel comfortable and confident wearing. Coordinating colours and styles rather than wearing identical outfits usually works particularly well.
